We know that losing weight can be hard. Sometimes it feels like you’re doing everything right but the kilos still aren’t dropping off! So, we’ve compiled a list of the latest scientific studies to help you out. Because with science on your side you can’t go wrong.
Although experts agree that the majority of weight loss comes down to dieting and cutting back on those extra calories your diet shouldn’t mean you miss out. A recent study demonstrated that diets that deprive people of their favourite foods tend to be short-lived. So, don’t be afraid to treat yourself occasionally!
Although this may seem obvious, some people believe that fasting for an extended period is the only way to lose weight. This method only sets you up for failure and makes for a pretty miserably dieting experience. Dieting like this is not healthy and is not sustainable. When you do eat, your body will process food differently. Your Metabolism will have slowed, and your body will store your meal as fat instead of using it. The best diets are balanced, allowing smaller portions to be consumed throughout the day. When this is supplemented with exercise, you will start to see results.
Recent studies have shown that those who eat more earlier in the day rather than in the afternoon experience significantly more weight loss compared to those who eat larger dinners and have admitted to late night snacking. Scientists agree that it’s best not to eat after 6 pm, however, we know this isn’t always possible. Perhaps it’s best to follow the adage “breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper.”
A recent study has shown that when you are sleep deprived you’re a more inclined to gravitate towards junk food to satisfy hunger. This may be explained by another study which demonstrated that when we’re sleep deprived the decision-making parts of our brain are less active, then when we are well rested. This means that many people crave the fatty and sugary foods and can’t make the right choices. Like we needed another excuse for more sleep!
Our metabolism changes as we get older and slows down. We naturally lose muscle mass with age, and this is the main factor that slows down metabolisms. Now you know why you can’t eat a whole box of pizza anymore. But not all is lost! Research has suggested that exercise can reduce the loss of muscle mass and change the way your metabolism functions. To activate this your workouts, need to be challenging. Try Zumba, aerobic exercise or lifting weights and you’ll see the difference soon.
